Success story of a Student of Gugs Campus

I am Lungelo Ashley Gqodo and was born on the 12th of March 1990 in Guguletu. I attended Sonwabo Primary School and Intshukumo Secondary School, also known as Guguletu Comprehensive High School.

I failed my matric in 2009. I was lost without hope to a point that I accepted the status quo that I was a failure, since I didn’t do well in matric. I didn’t have money to go and register for the subjects I have failed.

Fortunately someone encouraged me to go and apply for my supplementary examination and was also lucky to get a tutor. After all the hardship I finally passed my Grade 12 (matric) in 2010.

I realised there is more to live for than just having Matric.

In 2013 I enrolled at College of Cape Town (Guguletu Campus) for the Business Management programme, where I passed my N4, N5 and N6 with flying colours. I was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for being the Best Overall Student in Business Management. In 2015 I have graduated after completing my 18 months Theory.

In 2014 in September I went to do my internship at St. Francis Adult Education Centre as an Administrator for 7 months. I started an internship at the City of Cape Town on 4 May 2015 in the Property Management Department. The internship was for a period of 12 months and ended on 30 April 2016. Fortunately it has been extended for a further period of 1 year until 23 April 2017. These internships were arranged through the College of Cape Town.

On 1 January 2018 I was permanently employed by the City of Cape Town as a clerk in Property Management.This year (2018) I will complete the Human Resource Management programme at Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

I want to remind and encourage all young people that if I can do it, you can also do it as long as you have determination and persistence. You need to have clear objectives of where you want to be in life.

Look for opportunities as there are so many, refuse that your current circumstances hold you back. Whatever decision you take today will determine your tomorrow, choose the right association as they can either make or break you.

Short history of our College

The College of Cape Town is the oldest Technical and Vocational Education and Training (also known as TVET)Institution in South Africa. We have a proud history dating back nearly a 100 years.

As the name suggests, we are based in Cape Town.

Four former technical colleges, Athlone College, Cape College, Sivuyile College and Western Province Technical College were officially merged on 1 February 2002 to become the College of Cape Town.

This arose from a rationalization in TVET Colleges in which some 150 public colleges around the country were incorporated into 50 mega public institutions. These new institutions are now able to offer highly specialised training.

There are 6 public TVET Colleges in the Western Cape. The College of Cape Town serves Cape Town and its surrounding areas, as well as the Cape Flats.

Basic programmes

College of Cape Town is a well-established Public
TVET College with an excellent rating in teaching
and learning.

Two basic full-time types of programmes are offered:

* post matric programmes
* NC(V) programmes

Post Matric programmes:

A student needs a minimum of a matric or Grade Twelve or Level 4 to enrol. These programmes are also known as Report 191 or Nated programmes.

The programmes in the Faculty Business Studies are 18-month programmes, since each level is a six month programme.

The N4 Certificate is a 6 month programme, N5 is also a 6 month programme and the same for N6.

The programmes in the Faculty Electrical Engineering are 12-month programmes, since each level is a four month
programme.

The N1 Certificate is a 4 month programme, N2 is also a 4 month programme and the same for N3.

NC(V) programmes:

A student needs a minimum of a very good Grade Nine, preferably Grade Ten or higher to enrol for these pre-tertiary programmes.

NC(V) are three year programmes and consist of three levels, namely L2; L3 and L4. Each level is a one year programme.

Faculty Business Studies

The Faculty Business Studies offers the following programmes at the Guguletu Campus:

* NC(V): Management
* NC(V): Office Admin
* Business Management N4-N6
* Management Assistant N4-N6

Faculty Electrical Engineering

The Faculty Electrical Engineering offers the following programme at the Guguletu Campus:

* National N1-N3 Certificates in Electrical Engineering

There are various study and career fields available for students with the above qualifications.
